New Orleans History
Founded in 1718 by Jean-Baptiste Le Moyne de Bienville who was under the French Mississippi Company. The city was named for the French City of Orleans. In 1763 the French were ceded to the Spanish Empire and remained under Spanish control for 40 years. The rich architecture that New Orleans is known for in the French Quarter dates back to the Spanish control period. Louisiana reverted back to French control in 1801. However New Orleans was not sold to the United states until 1803 when Napoleon sold it. This gave the city great growing power during the early 1800's with a vast cultural diversity with Americans, French and Creole French.
The Battle of New Orleans happened in 1815 when Andrew Jackson lead the team that defeated the British that were sent during the War of 1812 to conquer the city.
Even with all the battles and turnovers of the land, the people persevered on. By the 1830's the population of the city had doubled and by 1840 New Orleans was marked as not only the 3rd largest city but also the wealthiest in the nation. The real estate market was booming in New Orleans. Making some of the finest antique real estate in todays market.
Today, even with disasters that come her way, New Orleans fights back, and continues on. Still undoubtedly one of the nations best cities. |
